What’s happening today at the Olympics: Historic gold in men’s hammer throw; Canadians miss swim relay podiums; Djokovic wins tennis gold over Alcaraz
Olympic highlights for August 4
- World champion Ethan Katzberg is now an Olympic champion after winning gold in the men’s hammer throw Sunday afternoon, with his winning shot being his first one. Canada’s Rowan Hamilton placed ninth in the finals, and Camryn Rogers came first in the women’s qualifier Sunday morning, advancing to the finals set for Tuesday.
- Both Canada’s men’s and women’s team were unable to reach the podium in the 4×100-metre medley relays with the men placing fifth and the women taking fourth. They were not able to add to Canada’s eight swimming medals, four of those won by 17-year-old Summer McIntosh.
- Tennis titan Novak Djokovic is the Olympic champion after defeating Spanish superstar Carlos Alcaraz in two thrilling sets to win gold in the men’s singles tournament at Roland Garros. The Serbian has appeared in four Olympics but only medaled once before, earning bronze in London 2012.
- The Canadian women’s basketball team won’t make it to the knock-out round after losing 70-79 to Nigeria in a must-win match. The Nigerian women’s victory made history as it will be first African basketball team, male or female, to reach the Olympic quarter finals.
- Wyatt Sanford ended Canada’s 28-year Olympic boxing medal drought by claiming bronze on Sunday morning, despite losing to France’s Sophiane Oumiha who will now box for gold in the men’s under-63.5-kilogram. New rules guaranteed both competitors a spot on the podium as soon as they qualified for the semi-finals, and Sanford’s bronze extends Canada’s medal streak to nine days.

Here’s what has happened today, August 4, at the Olympics
- Boxing: The International Olympic Committee has slammed the International Boxing Association’s gender testing as “not legitimate” as the two female boxers at the centre of the controversy advance. Algeria’s Imane Khelif and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting are both guaranteed at least a bronze medal each after qualifying for the semi-finals.
- Track: Andre De Grasse has not qualified for finals in the men’s 100-metre after placing 12th in the semi-finals overall. He did perform his season’s best at 9.98 seconds. Canada’s Charles Philibert-Thiboutot also did not qualify for the men’s 1,500-metre final, with his season’s best of 3 minutes and 33.29 seconds. He captured the country’s first track and field gold medal at the Pan Am Games last November.
- Golf: Canada’s Corey Conners tied for ninth place while teammate Nick Taylor tied at 30th after the final round of the men’s individual stroke competition.
- Water Polo: Team Canada extended their losing streak after falling to the Netherlands with a 20-11 score in women’s water polo. Canada lost to Australia 10-7 on Friday.
- Triathlon: Mixed relay trainings on Sunday were cancelled over concerns about water quality in the Seine River after two days of heavy rains.
- Sailing: Two-time Olympian Sarah Douglas placed eleventh in the women’s dinghy heats and will advance, while Emily Bugeja’s kitesurfing heat has been delayed due to wind since Sunday morning as the sport makes its Olympic debut.
- Canoe Slalom: Canadians Alex Baldoni and Lois Betteridge both did not qualify in the quarter-finals in the men’s and women’s kayak cross after falling short in the heats.
- Archery: Canadian Eric Peters won’t make the podium after a 6-2 defeat by Italy’s Mauro Nespoli in the men’s recurve elimination round Sunday morning. The 27-year-old from Kitchener, Ont. went from 64th to fifth in the world rankings in just over a year and won a silver medal at last year’s world championships.
What to watch for tomorrow, August 5, at the Olympics
