WATCH: This Canadian football team won their game with a walk-of punt
In American football, there are a few simple ways to score points. Touchdown, two-point conversion, extra point, field goal, and safety are the main ones, but drop-kick, two-point defensive touchdown on a point after try, and the ultra-rare one-point safety on a point after try are theoretically plausible as well.
However, in the Canadian Football League, there’s another fairly common way to pick up one point. It’s called a “rouge” or “single,” and it involves kicking a ball into the end zone without the other team returning it. This can happen on a kickoff, as a play that would be a touchback in the NFL would be a rouge in Canada, and the 20-yard end zones make it especially tough to bring the ball out if it’s kicked to the back.
We’ve seen teams win games by missing a field goal and recording a rouge after the other team failed to clear the ball from the end zone, but seeing it happen via a punt is a slightly rarer outcome. Teams usually have a returner ready to go, meaning that a punt would more or less need to get through the end zone to record the point.

However, that’s exactly what happened in this game between the Edmonton Elks and Toronto Argonauts. With the score tied in overtime, Edmonton punted the ball just out of reach of Toronto’s returner, securing the single point and the win. Edmonton isn’t making the playoffs, so this was a fun, if slightly bizarre, way to cap off their year in the regular season finale.
