Wall football gets revenge on Canadian in Region I final game with blowout win
(This story was updated to add new information.)
WOODROW — The third time was the charm for the Wall football team after beating Canadian 49-3 on Friday in the Class 3A Division II Region I final at Lubbock-Cooper Liberty Patriot Stadium.
After getting knocked out by the Wildcats in the regional final in back-to-back seasons, the Hawks got revenge in 2024. The win also marks the deepest playoff run for the Hawks since 2016 when they advanced to the state semifinal.
Canadian won the coin toss and took the ball to start the game. The Wildcats scored the game’s first points, driving down the field with a 27-yard field goal.
After the early score, the Hawks moved up and down the field at will, scoring 28 unanswered points with three of the four touchdowns coming on explosive plays from wide receivers Briggs Jones and Evan Boehle. The Hawks scored three touchdowns on four plays for the 28-3 lead at halftime.
“I think answering (Canadian’s scoring drive) was big,” Wall coach Craig Slaughter said. “… Our sideline breathed a sigh of relief because in the past years we’ve been behind the whole time. And that was the time we knew we were a different team this year.”
The second half was more of the same as Wall continued to stop Canadian and score unanswered points.
Landon York and the offensive starters were pulled halfway through the fourth quarter. He finished the game with 351 passing yards and five touchdowns.
“For Landon to do that against that type of competition was awesome,” Slaughter said. “… I cannot give enough respect to (Canadian’s) football program. They’ve run Region I for a long time.”
What’s next?
Wall (13-1) will face off against back-to-back reigning Class 3A DII champions Gunter (12-2) at 4 p.m. Dec. 13, at Abilene Christian University for a chance to play in the state title game in Arlington.
