UBC caps off 2024 season with men’s and women’s Golf Canada Championship titles – University of British Columbia Athletics
SUDBURY, Ont. – For the second time in the last three years, the UBC Thunderbirds have claimed both the men’s and women’s Golf Canada Canadian University Championships.
Leading the pack from post to wire, both T-Bird squads were dominant both individually and collectively at Sudbury’s Idylwylde Golf and Country Club with the men winning the team title by a whopping 50 strokes and the women earning their seventh consecutive Golf Canada banner with a margin of 42.
The T-Birds also swept the individual titles as Una Chou claimed the women’s gold medal by an incredible 14 strokes while Dylan MacDonald won the men’s crown after defeating Laval’s William Forgues in a playoff after both finished the 72 hole tournament one-under par.
Just as they had done with each passing day, the T-Birds expanded their respective team leads on Thursday, never allowing any of the other university and college programs competing a sniff.
Completing the four-day tournament at seven-under par, the UBC men were the only team to finish in the red. Fraser Valley managed the best team score on Thursday with a combined seven over (compared to UBC’s +12) to edge out both Montreal and Victoria for second place by a single stroke. UBC’s victory marks their eighth Golf Canada title.
The T-Bird women finished at +21 for the week, 42 strokes ahead of runners-up UBC Okanagan and an incredible 76 strokes ahead of the bronze medallists from Laval.
Winning his first individual Golf Canada University Championship, MacDonald equalled his second round of 72 on Thursday while Forgues fired one better as the two were forced into the playoff which the fourth-year T-Bird won on the first hole.
Hudson LaFayette also shot a 72 on Thursday to finish the tournament in sole possession of ninth place, just four strokes back of MacDonald.
Mackenzie Bickell and John Paul Kahlert tied for fourth along with Victoria’s Owen Croft. Bickell fired a three-over 75 in his final round while Kahlert finished with an 81.
En route to winning their seventh consecutive Golf Canada title – and 17th in program history – the UBC women managed to collectively shoot the lowest round on each of the four days of competition.
Chou’s individual victory was fueled by accomplishing the rare feat of shooting the lowest round of the day three times this week, including Thursday’s one-over 73 to clinch the title. Her outstanding week also included setting a new women’s course record of 67 in her second round, breaking the previous mark set by World Golf Hall of Fame member Marlene Stewart Streit back in 1974.
Bo Brown’s round of 75 moved her up one spot on the final leaderboard as she finished in a tie for third with teammate Grace Bell who shot a 78.
Jessica Ng finished sixth after firing an 80 on Thursday.
The dual UBC title wins marks the fifth time the Thunderbirds have managed the feat, having first done so in 2009. The victories cap off yet another outstanding season for the blue and gold golf programs which have every reason to foresee further championship banners in the 2024-25 season which will be here in a matter of months.
