Tottenham step up interest in Canadian hotshot Jonathan David? | Sporting News

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is expected to bring in more players ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season, with Canada international Jonathan David a rumoured target.

Postecoglu missed out on his objective of a top-four finish and UEFA Champions League qualification in his debut campaign, and the Australian is planning to change that in the next 12 months.

Highly rated teenager Archie Gray has already arrived from Leeds United, with the England Under-21 international offering flexibility to play in defense and midfield.

However, goals were an issue for Spurs last season, with Postecoglou’s charges netting 74 in 38 games, as the seventh-highest tally in the Premier League.

Captain Son Heung-min netted 17, but Postecoglou wants to ease the burden on the South Korean, and David is a possible option.

Tottenham ‘in contact’ with Jonathan David

As per an exclusive report from Football Insider, Spurs are said to be in “daily contact” with David’s representatives over a potential move, as they look to gain an edge on other interested English teams.

Lille club president Olivier Letang has previously hinted at the French club being willing to sell David, who is now into the final year of his contract in France, with £25 million ($32m) suggested as a possible asking price.

That would certainly fall within Tottenham’s price range as David looks for a new challenge away from Ligue 1.

Lille brought the 24-year-old hitman from Belgian side Gent in 2020, and his goal rate has remained impressive, with 43 league goals in the last two seasons.

Only Kylian Mbappe has scored more in that window in Ligue 1 and Tottenham may need to move quickly to bring him to North London.
