Teens charged after throwing food, firing cap gun inside London grocery store | CBC News

Three teenagers have been charged after allegedly ripping through a London grocery store yelling profanities, throwing food and firing an imitation cap gun. 

London police said they received numerous 911 calls Tuesday night from a location at Oxford Street and Hyde Park Road. CBC News has confirmed the calls came from the Real Canadian Superstore. 

Police said the three teens entered the store just before 8 p.m. and started causing a disturbance, including assaulting an employee. 

“I’m sure it was chaotic and I’m sure it was frightening for people who were in that store,” said Const. Matthew Dawson, a spokesperson for London Police Services. 

Police said the teens fled on foot but two were arrested outside of the store. A third was picked up a short distance away, with police saying the officer involved in the arrest suffered minor injuries and was treated in hospital. 

The teenagers, ages 14, 15 and 17, have been charged jointly with causing a disturbance by fighting, shouting and swearing. Two are facing theft charges, including stealing items of clothing.

The 15-year-old is also charged with possession of a weapon, while the youngest is charged with assault and assault with a weapon.

“These are all criminal offences and it does fall under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, but that doesn’t minimize the impact this has on the public,” said Dawson. “And it certainly doesn’t minimize the fact that they are criminal code charges.”

London police said they do not believe the teenagers are family members. Their names cannot be released due to rules under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The three youth are expected to appear in court on July 8.
