Charles Roberts will become the 16th member of the Winnipeg Football Club’s Ring of Honour and will be officially added during the Banjo Bowl on Saturday, September 7th against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Roberts played for the Blue Bombers from 2001-08 before being traded at the end of his career to the B.C. Lions. He was a Canadian Football League All-Star for seven consecutive seasons from 2001-07 and was selected as the CFL’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player in 2001, the year he was also a finalist for the Most Outstanding Rookie award. He was also a finalist for the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player Award in 2006. The Sacramento State product led the CFL in rushing three times (2003, 2005, 2006), was the Blue Bombers’ leading rusher seven times (including six straight 1,000-yard seasons) and finished his playing days as the franchise’s all-time leading rusher with 9,987 yards, surpassing Leo Lewis in 2007. Roberts ranks second in Blue Bombers history to Milt Stegall with 79 career touchdowns and his 64 along the ground ranks first. Roberts was named to the Winnipeg Football Club Hall of Fame in 2013 and a year later, was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes have moved into first place in the American Association’s West Division. Dayson Croes had two hits and scored three runs as Winnipeg downed the Gary SouthShore RailCats 6-3 Monday night at Blue Cross Park. The Fish are a half game ahead of the second place Sioux Falls Canaries and one game up on the third place Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks. The Goldeyes, who have clinched a playoff spot, have six games left in the regular season schedule. 


It’s day one of the Canadian Women’s Senior Golf Championship at The Club at North Halton in Georgetown, Ontario. Six Manitobans are in the field including Fran Povoledo, Lisa Benson, Mary Turner, Susan Wright-Cassan, Tammy Gibson and 11-time reigning provincial champion Rhonda Orr.


Canada’s flag-bearers for the upcoming Paralympic Games will be named today. They will lead the Canadian team into the opening ceremony on Wednesday in Paris. A total of 126 athletes from 18 sports will represent Canada at the 12-day event.
