Quarterback Jake Maier’s Christmas has shifted from red and white to green and white.

On Monday, the Saskatchewan Roughriders acquired the rights to pending free-agent quarterback Jake Maier in exchange for an eighth-round selection in the 2025 Canadian Football League draft.

Maier became expendable in Calgary when the Stampeders acquired pivot Vernon Adams Jr. from the B.C. Lions in a deal last month.

Maier has spent his entire four-year CFL career in Calgary, playing 65 games as a Stampeder making 45 starts. Over that time, the 27-year-old pivot completed 1,022 passes for 11,685 yards and 60 touchdowns with 39 interceptions and added 60 carries for 232 yards and five touchdowns.

Maier joins re-signed quarterback Trevor Harris and Jack Coan on the Rider roster entering 2025, with pending free agent pivot Shea Patterson on the team’s roster.

The trade could potentially reunite Maier with his former quarterback coach in Calgary and current Roughrider offensive coordinator Marc Mueller.
