Rahul Dravid, head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, showed a touch of class with a heartwarming gesture during the rain-affected match between India and Canada when he paid a surprise visit to the Canadian dressing room.
The highly anticipated encounter between India and Canada at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium in Florida was abandoned without a ball bowled due to a wet outfield. While this was a disappointment for both teams, it paved the way for a moment of sportsmanship.
Following the call-off, Dravid unexpectedly visited the Canadian dressing room.
During his visit, Dravid didn’t just offer words of encouragement; he shared personal experiences.
“Just thanks a lot. Firstly, just want to acknowledge and appreciate the fantastic contribution that you guys have made to this tournament. I think all of us recognise the struggles and the challenges that all of you have to do to be able to play this sport. It’s not easy,” he began his short speech.
“I understand that, having played actually as a cricketer in Scotland, way back, I think, in 2003, so I know what the struggle is like for an associate country”.
“So you guys, honestly are an inspiration to all of us. To show us that we love the game, truly, the kind of sacrifices, you guys are willing to make, to play this tournament”.
All I will say is that keep moving forward. You guys are inspiring, not only other people but I’m sure you’re inspiring young boys and girls in your own countries.”
Dravid’s gesture went viral on social media, with fans applauding the gesture.
Incidentally, Dravid had a unique experience playing for the Scottish national cricket team in the English domestic one-day league in 2003.
