The Canadian men’s basketball team is gearing up for the Paris Olympics and their opportunity at gold.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Jamal Murray of the Denver Nuggets will head a Canadian men’s basketball team with substantial NBA experience this summer.

Canada Basketball and the Canadian Olympic Committee announced the roster on Wednesday, with 11 of the 12 players having previously competed in the world’s top basketball league.

“Leading our senior men’s national team into the Paris 2024 Olympic Games is an incredible honour,” team captain Kelly Olynyk said in a statement. “I’ve wanted to represent Canada in the Olympics since I began playing basketball.

“Our third-place finish in last year’s FIBA World Cup was an important step in establishing ourselves as one of the world’s best teams. However, it also demonstrated that we still have work to do as we strive for our ultimate goal of winning gold in Paris.”

Hamilton’s Gilgeous-Alexander impressed as Canada advanced to the 2023 Olympics via the FIBA World Cup. He was selected for the All-Star team after averaging 24.5 points per game.

Canada ended the World Cup with a 6-2 record, including crucial victories against many top-10 teams, and won the bronze medal game against the United States. Eight Canadian players will participate in Paris.

The Canadian men’s basketball team did well in the FIBA World Cup, winning their first medal, but will they be able to replicate their success at the Paris Olympics in 2024?
Olynyk and RJ Barrett will represent the Toronto Raptors on the Canadian team, with Houston Rockets World Cup standout Dillon Brooks and Thunder defensive veteran Luguentz Dort.

Antetokounmpo leads Greece to the Olympics, where they will face Canada in Group A.
Murray, unlike other superstars, did not participate in the World Cup, which came just two months after a rigorous season that saw him win the NBA title in 2022-23. With Gilgeous-Alexander in the backcourt, the Kitchener, Ontario guard gives Canada a major offensive lift.

The Canadian team earned their last gold in 1936.
Melvin Ejim, who plays professionally for Unicaja Malaga in Spain, is the only player with no NBA experience.

The Canadian men’s basketball team will make their first Olympic appearance since finishing ninth at the 2000 Sydney Games. In 1936, men won just one Olympic medal: silver.

“When we started camp in Toronto last week, I challenged each of the players to improve one percent per day, and every day since, I’ve seen the hard work and dedication they’ve put in,” head coach Jordi Fernandez said in a statement. “With 17 days before our first game in the competition, we have a chance to improve by 17%.

“From the players to the coaches to the staff, the incredible opportunity ahead of us to do something truly historic for Canada this summer is not lost on anyone.”

Before the Paris Olympics, the Canadian men’s basketball team will play an exhibition game against the United States.

Following the group stage, a draw will be conducted to determine quarterfinal pairings, with the last round played in a knockout format.

Mike Bartlett, President and CEO of Canada Basketball, led the program’s rapid expansion. He believes the national teams will wow the globe in the 2024 Olympics.
