Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Jamal Murray of the Denver Nuggets will lead a Canadian men’s basketball squad with extensive NBA experience this summer.
Canada Basketball and the Canadian Olympic Committee revealed the team on Wednesday, with 11 of the 12 players having previously participated in the world’s top basketball league.
“Leading our senior men’s national team into the Paris 2024 Olympic Games is an incredible honour,” team captain Kelly Olynyk said in a statement. “I’ve wanted to represent Canada in the Olympics since I started playing basketball.
“Our third-place performance in last year’s FIBA World Cup was a significant step in establishing ourselves as one of the world’s greatest teams. However, it also highlighted that we still have work to do as we strive for our ultimate objective of capturing gold in Paris.”
Hamilton’s Gilgeous—Alexander shone as Canada qualified for the 2023 Olympics via the FIBA World Cup. He was chosen to the All-Star squad after averaging 24.5 points per game.
Canada finished the World Cup with a 6-2 record, including critical wins over many top-10 nations, and took the bronze medal game against the United States. Eight Canadian players will compete in Paris.

The Canadian men’s basketball team will make their first Olympic participation since placing ninth in the 2000 Sydney Games. In 1936, men won just one Olympic medal: silver.
“When we started camp in Toronto last week, I challenged each of the players to improve one percent per day, and every day since, I’ve seen the hard work and dedication they’ve put in,” head coach Jordi Fernandez said in a statement. “With 17 days before our first game in the tournament, there is an opportunity to improve by 17%.
“From the players to the coaches to the staff, the incredible opportunity ahead of us to do something truly historic for Canada this summer is not lost on anyone.”
