Olympic basketball : Olympic basketball Canada’s men’s basketball team is currently preparing for the Paris Olympics and their opportunity at gold.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Jamal Murray of the Denver Nuggets will lead a Canadian men’s basketball squad with plenty of NBA experience when they participate this summer.
Canada Basketball and the Canadian Olympic Committee unveiled the roster on Wednesday, with 11 of the 12 players having previously played in the world’s top basketball league.
“Leading our senior men’s national team into the Paris 2024 Olympic Games is an incredible honour,” team captain Kelly Olynyk said in a statement. “I’ve wanted to represent Canada in the Olympics since I first started playing basketball.
“Our third-place performance at the FIBA World Cup last year was a significant step in establishing ourselves as one of the greatest teams in the world. However, it also demonstrated that we still have work to do as we strive for our ultimate objective of capturing gold in Paris.”
Hamilton’s Gilgeous-Alexander shone when Canada qualified for the Olympics in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. He was nominated to the all-star team after scoring an average of 24.5 points per game.
Canada finished the World Cup with a 6-2 record, including critical wins over multiple top-10 teams, and won the bronze medal game against the United States. Eight players from the roster will represent Canada in Paris.
The Canadian men’s basketball team enjoyed a remarkable run at the FIBA World Cup, earning their first medal, but will they be able to recreate that success at the Paris Olympics in 2024?
On Canada’s roster, Olynyk and RJ Barrett will represent the Toronto Raptors, alongside World Cup star Dillon Brooks of the Houston Rockets and defensive veteran Luguentz Dort from the Thunder.

Murray, unlike those names, did not participate in the World Cup, which came just two months after a demanding season in which he won the NBA championship in 2022-23. The Kitchener, Ont., guard provides a significant offensive boost to Canada with Gilgeous-Alexander in the backcourt.
The Canadian team last won a medal in 1936.
Melvin Ejim, who plays professionally for Unicaja Malaga in Spain, is the only player without NBA experience.
The Canadian men’s basketball team will make their first Olympic participation since placing eighth at the 2000 Sydney Games. The men’s only Olympic medal was silver in 1936.
“When we started camp in Toronto last week, I challenged each of the players to improve one percent per day, and every day since, I’ve seen the hard work and dedication they’ve put in,” head coach Jordi Fernandez said in a statement. “With 17 days before our first game of the tournament, there’s a possibility to improve by 17 percent.
“From the players to the coaches to the staff, the incredible opportunity ahead of us to do something truly historic for Canada this summer is not lost on anyone.”

Bring it in.The Canadian men’s basketball team is on track to break their 24-year Olympic drought. The games will take place between July 27 and August 10.
Canada is in Group A, with Greece, Australia, and Spain. The seventh-ranked Canadians will begin action on July 27 against 14th-ranked Greece, then face fifth-ranked Australia on July 30 and second-ranked Spain on August 2.
The group stage will be contested at Lille, France. The top two teams from each group, as well as the two best third-place teams, advance to the finals, which will take place in Paris.
Following the group round, a draw will be conducted to establish quarterfinal pairings, with the final phase contested in a knockout style.
Mike Bartlett, the President and CEO of Canada Basketball, has overseen the program’s exponential growth. He thinks that the national teams will stun the world at the 2024 Olympics.
