“Our third-place finish at last year’s FIBA World Cup was a huge step in establishing ourselves as one of the best teams in the world. However, it also underlined that we still have work to do as we pursue our ultimate goal of winning gold in Paris.”
Hamilton’s Gilgeous-Alexander excelled when Canada qualified for the 2023 Olympics via the FIBA World Cup. He was named to the all-star team after scoring an average of 24.5 points per game.
Canada ended the World Cup with a 6-2 record, including key victories over many top-10 teams, and won the bronze medal game against the United States. Eight players on the roster will represent Canada in Paris.

Olynyk and RJ Barrett will represent the Toronto Raptors on the Canadian team, along with Houston Rockets World Cup standout Dillon Brooks and Thunder defensive veteran Luguentz Dort.

Murray, unlike those superstars, did not compete in the World Cup, which came only two months after a rigorous season that saw him win the NBA title in 2022-23. With Gilgeous-Alexander in the backcourt, the Kitchener, Ontario guard gives Canada a major offensive lift.
The Canadian team earned their last medal in 1936.
Melvin Ejim, who plays professionally for Unicaja Malaga in Spain, is the only player with no NBA experience.
The Canadian men’s basketball team will make their first Olympic appearance since finishing ninth at the 2000 Sydney Games. In 1936, men won just one Olympic medal: silver.
“When we started camp in Toronto last week, I challenged each of the players to improve one percent per day, and every day since, I’ve seen the hard work and dedication they’ve put in,” head coach Jordi Fernandez said in a statement. “With 17 days before our first game of the competition, there is a chance to improve by 17%.
“From the players to the coaches to the staff, the incredible opportunity ahead of us to do something truly historic for Canada this summer is not lost on anyone.”
Before the Paris Olympics, the Canadian men’s basketball team will play an exhibition game against the United States.

Canada is in Group A, with Greece, Australia, and Spain. The seventh-ranked Canadians will play 14th-ranked Greece on July 27 before facing fifth-ranked Australia on July 30 and second-ranked Spain on August 2.
The group stage will be held in Lille, France. The top two teams from each group, together with the two best third-place teams, will proceed to the finals, which will be held in Paris.
Following the group stage, a draw will be held to determine quarterfinal pairings, with the final round played in a knockout format.
Mike Bartlett, President and CEO of Canada Basketball, has supervised the program’s rapid expansion. He believes the national teams will amaze the globe in the 2024 Olympics.
Canada’s roster includes Nickeil Alexander-Walker of Toronto, RJ Barrett of Mississauga, Ont., and Khem Birch from Montreal.
Dillon Brooks is from Mississauga, Ontario, and Luguentz Dort lives in Montreal.
Melvin Ejim is from Toronto, Ontario, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander resides in Hamilton.
Trey Lyles from Saskatoon is joined by Jamal Murray from Kitchener, Ontario, Andrew Nembhard from Aurora, Ontario, Kelly Olynyk from Kamloops, British Columbia, and Dwight Powell from Toronto.
