Oklahoma State Basketball Announces Signing of 6-6 Canadian Mikey Kelvin II

The Cowboys went north of the border to add to their ranks.

Oklahoma State on Monday announced the signing of Mikey Kelvin II. Kelvin joins the program by way of Queens University in Ontario, Canada. He is a 6-foot-6 wing who averaged 10.1 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.1 blocks a game last season while hitting 38% of his 3-point attempts.

Canada has what is called the U Sports Men’s Basketball Championship (the Canadian equivalent of the NCAA Tournament). Queens hadn’t made the tournament in its history before Kelvin got to campus. The Golden Gaels have since been to three straight including a runner-up finish this past season.

“Mikey is a great young man who has competed and excelled at the highest level of Canadian university basketball,” said new OSU coach Steve Lutz in the release. “He’s long, athletic and shoots the three well. He has only been playing basketball since his junior year of high school but has already had a great deal of success, including a run to Canada’s national championship game. We’re excited to have him join the Cowboy Family this year.”

Kelvin will be on scholarship, using OSU’s 12th. That means Lutz and Co. still have one available scholarship to use. Lutz has brought in nine scholarship players since taking over on April 1. Those nine join Bryce Thompson, Jamyron Keller and Connor Dow — holdovers from the Mike Boynton era of OSU hoops.

Although Kelvin does fill an open spot on the roster, he doesn’t necessarily help with the Cowboys’ size issue. Xavier transfer big Abou Ousmane is the only player on the roster listed taller than 6-foot-8. He’ll likely be joined in the paint by Texas Tech transfer Robert Jennings II (6-8, 225 pounds) and West Virginia transfer Patrick Suemnick (6-7, 225). But the Cowboys still have some time to add another big before the season.
