While the United States of America (USA) has become the toast of the world after pulling off a shock victory over Pakistan in the 2024 T20 World Cup, their neighboring nation, Canada, will try to achieve the same feat when they face Pakistan and India on Tuesday (June 11) and Saturday (June 15), respectively.
So far, Canada have played two games in which they lost to co-hosts USA before pulling off a shock win over Ireland.
Here are the four India-born players part of Canada’s Squad
Navneet Dhaliwal – The former captain of the Canada cricket team, Navneet Dhaliwal, is the opening batter of the Canada cricket team and scored a half-century in the team’s opening match against the USA. He was born in Chandigarh, India, and played age group cricket for Punjab.
It was at the age of 22 that Dhaliwal moved to Canada with his family, where his father purchased a gas station. He made his debut for Canada in the shortest format in 2019, having earlier played List-A cricket for almost a decade. He made his ODI debut for Canada in 2024.
Pargat Singh – Middle-order Pargat Singh is another player on the Canada cricket team, hailing from Punjab. Pargat was born in the Indian city of Ropar while spending most of his childhood in Jalandar. Pargat played for Punjab in all three formats of the game, with Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj as his teammates after making his debut in 2015.
However, Pargat last played for Punjab in 2017 and moved to Canada, where he made his debut for the national team in a T20I in 2022 and in the ODI format in 2023.
Dilpreet Bajwa – Dilipreet Bajwa, who is a middle-order batter, is another player on the Canada team who was born in Punjab and is from the city of Gurdaspur. Bawja at the age of 21 is already a vital part of the Canadian team but it was only four years ago that he moved to the country.
Bajwa completed his education in India, but moved to Canada with his family in 2020 after failing to get a chance with the state team following multiple rejections.
He made his T20I debut with Canada in 2023 while playing his maiden ODI earlier this year.
Shreyas Movva – Canada’s wicketkeeper and vice captain, Shreyas Movva, is also someone who was born in India before moving to the USA. Unlike others, he did not migrate to Canadian shores in search of playing cricket but instead wanted to study at Montreal’s Concordia University. He is a software engineer by profession.
Movva made his debut for Canada in 2021 and has played seven matches in both the ODI and T20I formats for the national team.
