The inaugural BC Adult Flag Football League’s International 5v5 Open Tournament kicked off Saturday morning (July 27) at South Surrey Athletic Park.
Derek Slavin, Vice President and Founder of the BC Adult Flag Football League, said over 350 players from Canada and the United States are participating this weekend.
“The common theme today is just good vibes,” Slavin said. “Everybody’s having a great time. All these players and teams that have come from out of the country are loving it. They’re like, we want to play up here more often.”
The tournament has three divisions: men’s, women’s and coed.
Each team played four games on Saturday, and the playoff games will take place on Sunday (July 28). Sunday’s schedule will be posted online within one hour of the final game on Saturday, Slavin said.
Admission is free for spectators wanting to catch all the action at the tournament, with several food options available at South Surrey Athletic Park.
The BC Adult Flag Football League launched in December 2023. Over 700 players registered for the league’s regular season, with over 70 percent being Surrey residents.
“We ended up sending five teams from our league to the senior flag football nationals through Flag Football Canada.”
“One of our men’s teams (Vancity Vice) that showed up there, placed second in the country. For our first season, we’d say that’s quite the success,” Slavin said.
“Flag Football is the fastest-growing sport on the planet, and we’re proving it,” Slavin said.
