Elks name Jackson interim head coach and Simon interim GM
The Edmonton Elks have named Jarious Jackson their new interim head coach and Geroy Simon as their new interim general manager on Monday according to cfl.ca. The Elks have a record of zero wins and five losses to start the 2024 Canadian Football League season.
Edmonton has basically promoted Jackson and Simon. Jackson had been the offensive co-ordinator and quarterbacks coach, while Simon had been the assistant general manager. Edmonton also decided to fire Chris Jones, who had been the head coach and general manager.
Simon is one of the best wide receivers in CFL history. He is the all-time leader in receiving yards with 16,352, and had 1029 catches and 103 touchdown catches. Simon played 15 seasons in the CFL. He was with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1999 and 2000, the British Columbia Lions from 2001 to 2012, and with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2013. Simon won three Grey Cups (2006 and 2011 with the Lions, and 2013 with the Roughriders), and was the CFL’s most outstanding player in 2006. That year he had career-highs in receptions (105), receiving yards (1856), and touchdown catches (15).
Jackson was a quarterback with the British Columbia Lions from 2004 to 2011, and with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2012. He completed 571 passes in 1054 attempts for 7878 passing yards, 55 touchdowns and 38 interceptions. Jackson also had 1472 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns.
It should be noted that the Elks have been competitive in every game this season. They have lost five games by a total of 20 points. However, from a defensive perspective, the Elks have had poor tackling, and made major mistakes late in ball games. On Sunday, the major error came from kicker Boris Bede, whose kickoff went out of bounds and allowed the Redblacks to have excellent field position with eight seconds left.
