Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing increasing pressure to step down following recent byelection defeats in Toronto and Montreal, according to local media reports. At least 20 leaders from the ruling Liberal Party have signed the document calling for a change in leadership, according to CBC.
The group of disgruntled lawmakers put forth their demand after holding a series of secretive meetings following the surprising loss in the Toronto-St. Paul’s byelection in June. The call for Trudeau’s ouster accelerated with Parliament’s return and intensified following the Montreal byelection defeat, according to CBC.
At least “30 to 40 MPs” are ready to sign a letter seeking Trudeau’s ouster, according to the Toronto Star.
Still, the number of dissenting MPs is unlikely to lead to a change in leadership. The Liberal Party holds 153 seats in Canada’s House of Commons.
Document to oust Justin Trudeau
The document signed by the dissenting leaders has been described as a pledge to secure a commitment from MPs to push for Trudeau’s resignation.
“This is an insurance policy. We needed to act before the pressure from the PMO intensifies,” an MP was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
Trudeau’s aides have expressed disappointment about the MPs’ plan. Trade Minister Mary Ng, who’s traveling back to Canada from Laos with Trudeau, said she has full confidence in the prime minister, the Canadian Press reported.
This is not the first time Trudeau has found himself at risk of losing power.
In September, Trudeau govt faced challenge after a parliamentary pact with another party which has kept Trudeau in power fell apart. Later in the month, he survived an attempt from the opposition Conservative Party to force an election.
