Dinos mourn Ben Fairbrother – University of Calgary Athletics

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of football alumnus and Vanier Cup champion Ben Fairbrother Friday in Edmonton. Fairbrother was 51.
 
A graduate of Calgary’s Bishop Carroll High School, Fairbrother joined the Dinos’ offensive line in 1992 and spent four years with the program, racking up a pair of Canada West all-star nods (1995, 1996) as well as a second team All-Canadian selection in 1996.
 
His time in the Scarlet and Gold was highlighted by the 1995 Vanier Cup championship, a 54-24 win over Western at SkyDome in Toronto, where he started at left tackle.
 
He capped his university career with an invite to the 1997 East-West Shrine Game in Palo Alto, Calif., before the Saskatchewan Roughriders selected him second overall in the 1997 Canadian Football League draft. He played 95 CFL games with Saskatchewan and the B.C. Lions before retiring in 2003.
 
He spent the last four seasons as offensive line coach with the Edmonton Wildcats junior program.
