The Canadians were able to get their first win in ICC Men’s T20 World Cups with a win over Ireland by 12 runs in New York.

Canada beat Ireland by 12 runs at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on June 7, Friday to register their first win in the T20 World Cup. The side led by Saad Bin Zafar put up performances with both bat and ball to help them get their first points of the season.

While the conditions at Nassau County were under the scanner after the sub-par pitches being used for the previous games in the tournament, the surface was rolled on fairly more than the previous games which resulted in a fairly decent batting surface in comparison to the two-paced tracks that was present earlier.

Ireland who won the toss and chose to bowl first had a fairly decent start with the Canadians losing out both their openers in the powerplay. Canada went on to lose two more by the mid-way stage of the innings. However, the middle-order pair of Nicholas Kirton along with the wicketkeeper-batter, Shreyas Movva gave the much-needed stability with a 75-run partnership.

Movva was run out while Kirton missed out on a half-century as Canada finished with a target of 138 for Ireland in the second innings.

Paul Stirling who is known to go after the bowlers early in the powerplay, took a more cautious approach and it ended up being his downfall as he was dismissed by Jeremy Gordon after scoring just 9 runs in 17 balls in the final over of the batting powerplay.

Fellow opening batter, Andrew Balbirnie did not last too long as well as he was dismissed in the first over following the powerplay as Ireland put up a very nervy performance with the bat.

The skipper Saad Bin Zafar, also delivered with the ball as he got rid of Harry Tector as the Irish side struggled to score boundaries through the middle stages of the innings.

Dillon Heyliger also delivered with the ball as he took two wickets in his quota of four overs as he continued to pile on the pressure against Ireland who looked to be out of the contest.

However, the game went down to the final over thanks to the fine knocks by Mark Adair and George Dockerell, who ended their boundary drought and showed the top-order batters the intent that they lacked.

But it ended up in vain as Adair was dismissed by Jeremy Gordon in the final over to put an end to the contest and mark a historic moment in the books of Canadian cricket.
