Chicago Bears Release Canadian OL Theo Benedet, Sign Him to Practice Squad, BC Lions Draft Pick

The Chicago Bears waived Canadian offensive lineman Theo Benedet on Tuesday. He had previously signed with the Bears as an undrafted free agent in April with a contract that had $100,000 total in guarantees. On Wednesday he was one of 14 players signed to the Bears practice squad.

Benedet started in every game for the UBC Thunderbirds over 4 seasons with the program. He was the first offensive player to win back-to-back J.P Metras Trophies having won the title in 2022 and 2023 which are awarded to the top offensive or defensive lineman in U Sports football annually.

In 2023 Benedet played a key role in protecting Garrett Rooker who led Canada West in passing yards with 283 per game. Their running back Isaiah Knight was second in rushing yards per game with 112.

Theo Benedet and his teammate on the offensive line, Giovani Manu, drew the attention of NFL scouts to UBC’s pro day which saw 16 NFL teams send representatives. Manu was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the 4th round this past NFL Draft and was one of the players to make Detroit’s roster following final roster cuts.

Theo Benedet was drafted by the BC Lions in the second round of the CFL Draft 15th overall. The BC Lions made a high-risk high-reward move in selecting him in the 2nd round knowing he had signed with the Chicago Bears. Should he ever come to the CFL he would be a tremendous asset to the Lions who have at times had struggles in pass protection this season.

With how rare U Sports players get NFL opportunities it would be great to see him have a successful NFL career coming out of UBC.
