Canadian Tennis Preview: 2024 Olympics
Team Canada will be represented by five tennis players at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. In men’s singles, the players are the 13th seed and 2021 United States Open semifinalist Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, Quebec, as well as 2016 Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ontario. Auger-Aliassime and Raonic will also play men’s doubles together.
On the women’s side, Canada will be represented by the 16th seed and 2021 United States Open finalist Leylah Annie Fernandez of Montreal, 2019 United States Open champion Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario, and doubles specialist Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa, Ontario. Dabrowski will play alongside Fernandez in women’s doubles, where they are the fifth seeds, and mixed doubles with Auger-Aliassime.
In the first round, Auger-Aliassime will face Marcos Giron of the United States on Saturday (approximately 6am MT). Auger-Aliassime has won three of four matches head-to-head. Auger-Aliassime’s wins came in the quarterfinals of Halle in 2021 (6-3, 6-2), the third round of the 2022 Italian Open on clay (6-3, 6-2), and the first round of Halle in 2022 (6-3, 5-7, 6-3). Giron’s win came in their last match, the quarterfinals of the Japan Open in 2023 (6-1, 6-4).
Ih the first round, Raonic will face Dominik Koepfer of Germany on Sunday. Raonic lost their only prior meeting in the second round of the 2021 Mexican Open in Acapulco, 6-4, 6-2.
Fernandez’s first match will be a tough test as she faces Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic, the 2023 French Open finalist (4am MT on Saturday). Muchova won their only prior meeting, 6-4, 7-6, in the second round of the 2022 Miami Open.
Andreescu will face Clara Tauson of Denmark (approximately 6am MT on Saturday). This will be their first meeting head-to-head.
Auger-Aliassime and Raonic will face the American duo and third seeds, Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul in the first round in men’s doubles. Fernandez and Dabrowski will face Clara Burel and Varvara Gracheva of France in the first round in women’s doubles (Saturday, approximately 10am MT), and Dabrowski and Auger-Aliassime will face Great Britain’s Heather Watson and Joe Salisbury in the first round in mixed doubles.
