Canadian football takes down Childress to secure District 1-3A Division II championship

CHILDRESS — The Canadian football team won the District 1-3A Division II matchup on Friday night by taking down Childress 28-7 to remain unbeaten in league play.

The Wildcats (7-3, 4-0) and Bobcats (5-5, 3-1) met in the final game of the regular season with both teams coming into the contest at 3-0 in District 1-3A Division II.

Senior wide receiver and defensive back Julian Dominguez led the way for Canadian, catching a touchdown pass and returning an interception for another score.

For Childress, senior quarterback Drake Rabe threw the team’s only touchdown pass in his first game back from injury.

Game-changing plays

The Wildcats got on the scoreboard first, scoring once late in the opening frame and again in the second quarter to take a 14-0 lead into halftime.

Canadian scored again late in the third quarter when Dominguez nabbed a Rabe pass and returned it 90 yards for a touchdown. The Bobcats responded, however, with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Rabe to Cash Hightower to cut the Wildcats’ advantage to 21-7.

Canadian came up with another pick-six in the fourth quarter to seal their victory and win District 1-3A Division II.

With the regular season now complete, both teams await their playoff matchups and will start preparing for the postseason.
