Although Team Canada dropped its first game to the United States 11 days ago, much-needed rest came with it, along with critically important improvements on both sides of the ball in Friday’s victory against France.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led Canada in the win, scoring 23 points, including a pre-Olympic best 6-of-13 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the free-throw line. His teammate, R.J. Barrett, added 21 of his own, adding to a dynamic scoring presence that went quiet over a week prior.

Elsewhere, Kelly Olynyk and Andrew Nembhard added 24 combined points despite Canada struggling from 3-point range again, finishing just 9-of-26 from beyond the arc.

Gilgeous-Alexander said his team is finally putting the pieces together at the right time before the games count on the world’s grandest stage.

“We are for sure better than we were last summer; we can all feel it,” Gilgeous-Alexander told Basketball.CA after the 85-73 win. “We’re excited to see where we can take it in the next couple of weeks.”

France’s next couple of weeks are rapidly approaching. Its final pre-Olympic game against Puerto Rico will be followed by 48 hours of rest. The game will remain in France, giving Canada the unofficial home-court edge.

Canada will have more rest ahead of the Paris Olympics and will play again against Greece in Group A on Saturday, July 27.
