Today, the Honourable Soraya Martinez Ferrada, Minister of Tourism and Minister responsible for the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, announced the $800 million Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program (CGHAP) on behalf of the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. This program is designed to assist low-to-median-income Canadians, including tenants, in upgrading their homes to reduce energy costs and decrease pollution. The CGHAP will replace the Canada Greener Homes Grant (CGHG) and provide more extensive support for retrofit installations at no cost to participating households.

The program uses a “direct install” model, where third parties manage and deliver the retrofits, offering up to four times the support compared to the previous grant program. Experienced energy efficiency professionals will determine the recommended retrofits, ensuring that each participant receives the necessary upgrades to make their homes more affordable and comfortable.

The Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program (CGHAP) expands on the achievements of the Canada Greener Homes Grant (CGHG), which has already supported 240,000 homeowners in installing energy-efficient heat pumps, windows, doors, and insulation. With an average grant of $4,400 per household, these upgrades have resulted in significant savings, with each household cutting nearly $400 annually from their energy bills and reducing emissions by 1.18 tonnes of CO2.

Looking ahead, the CGHG will continue to assist hundreds of thousands more participants in completing retrofit projects. These initiatives aim to further decrease energy consumption and lower emissions, making homes across Canada more sustainable and cost-effective.

The Government of Canada introduces the Canada Green Buildings Strategy, aiming to improve energy efficiency, reduce energy bills, and support jobs nationwide.
