Canada beats France 2-1 in Olympic women’s soccer

With all of the controversy surrounding the Olympic Women’s Soccer tournament for Team Canada, the fact that they have won* both their games is significant. On Sunday, Canada stayed alive in the tournament with a 2-1 win over the host nation from France.

The Canadian goal scorers were Canadian Olympic gold medalists Jessie Fleming of London, Ontario and Vanessa Gilles of Chateauguay, Quebec. Fleming scored the game-tying goal at the 58th minute, and Gilles scored the game-winning goal in the 12th minute of extra time in the second half. There were 15 minutes of extra time in the second half because French goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin left the game with an eye injury and took a while to get up and moving.

As it stands now Canada has a record of two wins and zero losses, and zero points because of dronegate. What is even more fabulous is the fact Canada can still win Group A. That would be the case if New Zealand beats France and Canada beats Colombia. The Canadians must beat the Colombians to proceed to the quarterfinals, but the fact they still can win the group when FIFA took six points away from them is downright hilarious. In other action on Sunday, Colombia beat New Zealand 2-1, Australia beat Zambia 6-5, the United States beat Germany 4-1, Japan beat Brazil 2-1 and Spain beat Nigeria 1-0.
