Cam Burke runs away with the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur

After shooting a 7-under 63 in the second round of the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur, Cam Burke never looked back. 

Burke clinched the 2024 championship with a dominant performance at the Carleton Golf and Yacht Club, finishing the tournament at 14-under par to secure a nine-shot victory.

Burke’s impressive final round of 3-under 67 was more than enough to secure a nine-stroke victory.

He began the final day at the top of the leaderboard but faced an early challenge with a bogey on the par-4 fourth hole. However, he kept his foot on the gas, recording four birdies, two bogeys, and an eagle throughout the rest of the round. He played holes No. 5, 6, and 7 4-under to pull away from the field and bounce back from the early bogey.

“It feels awesome,” Burke told Golf Canada after the round. “Obviously, every time you show up to one of these events that is what you are trying to do and you know I didn’t let myself get too far ahead of myself if that makes sense.

Burke added, “I tried to stay in the moment and just focus on what I was doing but now that it’s over, it feels pretty cool for sure. Again, I just, I don’t know my parents have been watching my dog all week so I kinda miss my dog so I will probably just go back there tonight and scoop her up and my friends and family will probably want to get something together this weekend, but nothing planned as of yet.” 

David Lang and Kyle Gordon were T2 at 5-under par as the day began. Both played well, as Lang carded a final-round 3-under 67 and Gordon shot 2-under 68, but neither could challenge Burke’s lead.

Burke, 37, was born in Kitchener, Ontario. After attending Eastern Michigan University, he won a title on the eGolf Tour (over Harold Varner III) and earned his Web.com Tour card in 2014. He had little success on that tour and failed to retain his card, so he returned to the amateur game via reinstatement.

Brooks Lancaster won the Mid-Master division, with Christopher Tayer of Golden, Colo., placing second. Gary Pike of Victoria, B.C., placed third.

Tournament Notes

The Carleton Golf and Yacht Club provided a challenging and fair test for the competitors throughout the tournament. The weather conditions on the final day were ideal for golf, with mild temperatures and light winds.

Joe Deraney, the 2023 winner, and three-time champ, did not return to the field this year to defend.

On Wednesday, Team Ontario defended its inter-provincial title, securing the Bruce Forbes Trophy for a record 18th time in the competition’s 30-year history. Ontario was represented by Cam Burke, Ben Thompson of Toronto, Ont., and Charles Fitzsimmons of King, Ont., who finished with a total score of 5-under to defeat Team Manitoba by seven strokes.
