Calgary Stampeders players give low grades for field, food quality in new report

The Calgary Stampeders have received low marks from a recent Canadian Football League Players’ Association (CFLPA) Report Card.

“The report card presents valuable insights, provided by players, about their respective clubs to not only assist one another in making informed free agency decisions but also to contribute to raising standards for conditions across the league,” says a news release from the CFLPA.

A total of 495 players from across the league were given an anonymous 58-question survey to fill out over two weeks in October of 2024.

According to the CFLPA, the main goal of the report card is to showcase teams setting a good example, finding ways to improve, and highlighting the best workplace and practice standards.

McMahon Stadium hosts fans from across southern Alberta including Strathmore and Chestermere during the football season.

Calgary’s grades:

  • Football Operations: C-
  • Management and Administration: D+
  • Training and Medical Staff: C+
  • Equipment: C+
  • Family Treatment: D+
  • Nutrition and Diet: D-
  • Team Travel: C
  • Training Camp: C+

“Players provided evaluations based on their personal experiences with their current teams. The survey included a combination of multiple choice, rating, and open-ended questions over eight categories, allowing players to provide detailed feedback,” says the report.

At the end of the survey, Stampeders players were also able to provide anonymous feedback.

“Most players have to get a gym membership to get a real workout during the season. The field in Calgary has also led to many major and minor injuries.”

“We need a new field and need meals. We also need help with transportation to and from the facility for guys that are from the US and don’t have cars out here in Canada.”

“Calgary’s practice and game field are unacceptable”

The report mentioned that the Stamps have since announced that a new turf will be installed at McMahon Stadium before the start of the 2025 season.
