Chatham’s Caleb Roberts won a gold medal with Team Ontario at the Canadian 17U boys’ basketball championship Saturday in Toronto.

Roberts was Ontario’s second-leading scorer with 16 points in a 93-87 comeback win over B.C.

He had four points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals Friday in an 81-66 semifinal win over Quebec.

Roberts helped Ontario go 5-0 at the tournament. He was second on the team in scoring (11.2 points per game), assists (3.4 per game) and steals (1.2 per game).

He won gold with Ontario at the Canadian 15U championship in 2022.

Bentley medals at youth nationals

Chatham’s Brooke Bentley won a bronze medal at the Royal Canadian Legion youth track and field championships on the weekend in Calgary.

Bentley was third in the under-18 girls’ shot put with a throw of 13.83 metres. She fouled out in the hammer.

Bentley represented the London Western Track and Field Club.

Two Red Devils win league awards

Two Wallaceburg Red Devils have won year-end awards in the Ontario Jr. B Lacrosse League.

Goalie Waukiigan Shognosh is the West rookie of the year after posting an 8.23 goals-against average and .850 save percentage in 17 games.

Kaelen Smith is the West most sportsmanlike player after having 27 goals, 35 assists and only one minor penalty in 18 games.

The Red Devils won the Far West Division before losing in the first playoff round.

Eagles in second after weekend split

The Chatham Eagles split two weekend road games in the London and Area Women’s Soccer League, losing to the St. Thomas Reds 2-0 Sunday after beating the first-place London U21 Whitecaps 2-1 Friday.

After the Eagles failed to score on some quality chances early Sunday, the Reds took advantage of defensive miscues to score twice in the first half, coach John Foster said.

“Chatham was the better team in the second half, controlling more of the play and again getting the majority of chances,” he said. “. . . The 2-0 loss will hopefully serve as a wake-up call.”

On Friday, Hannah Balan scored a tying goal in the first half off a pass from her sister, Abby. Abby Balan then scored the winner in the second half on a rebound after Alex Arbour’s shot was stopped.

The second-place Eagles (6-3-2) will host the first-place Whitecaps (7-2-2) Thursday at 6:45 p.m. at St. Clair College’s Chatham campus.

Hooker wins two features at Buxton

Jake Hooker won the feature races for the Thunder Stocks and Late Models at Buxton Speedway Saturday.

Brett Stratford (Crate Sprints), Steve Conway (Mini Stocks) and Brian Koomans (Mini Mods) also won features.

The Great Lakes Legends Series is slated to visit this Saturday. The Mini Stocks, Mini Mods, Thunder Stocks and Modifieds also will be on the track starting at 6:30 p.m.

DeKonings score in Attack’s victory

Nelson DeKoning and Nolan DeKoning scored Sunday in the Chatham Attack’s 2-1 win over the London Thunder in the Western Ontario Soccer League’s First Division.

The Attack (3-7-0) will host African Carib Friday at 6:45 p.m. at St. Clair College’s Chatham campus.

In the Premier Division, the Chatham Express lost 3-0 to the London Olympians Sunday. The Express (1-11-0) will host Jagiellonia Saturday at 1 p.m. at the college.

In the Fourth Division, Lucas Romano and Ethan Quinteros scored Sunday in the Chatham Galaxy’s 3-2 loss to the Oakridge Blast. The Galaxy (8-3-0) will host the Woodstock Stallions in the season finale Friday at 8 p.m. at the Keil Drive fields.

The Galaxy have clinched a top-two finish and will be promoted to the Third Division next season.
