Our editors have been busy testing the best clothing brands in Canada and beyond, to determine which of their best-selling styles are truly worth the investment. We’ve covered lululemon, Frank & Oak, Aritzia, Reformation, Everlane and Sezane. Each brand impressed us for one reason or another. For me, sustainability efforts are paramount when it comes to deciding which brand to support over another.

I’ve had Kotn in my closet for several years. Founded in Toronto in 2015, the brand has prioritized high-quality clothing, ethical and transparent manufacturing and sustainable practices from the very beginning.

As a certified b-corporation, Kotn’s social and environmental impacts are closely observed, ensuring the highest standards are met. According to the brand’s website, “With each order, we invest in the creation of jobs, infrastructure, systems, and education to alleviate poverty and create shared, sustainable growth for the communities we are part of.” That’s something I’m willing to invest in.

I put some of their best-selling essentials and new season styles to the test, ranking them below in my most to least favourite.

Ranking my favourite Kotn styles

  1. Easy Crew
  2. Knit Crop Tank
  3. Fine Knit Skirt
  4. Mesh Tee
  5. Kulthum Tank (Kultham Shirt)
  6. Linen Station Shorts
  7. Plaza Trouser

Details on my Kotn rankings

Easy Crew

Why it’s my favourite: Imagine your favourite white (or off-white in my case) T-shirt. The one with the relaxed fit that’s not too long and not too short but just right. The sleeves are long enough to cuff but look great as is. The fabric is buttery soft and made from 100 per cent ethically sourced Egyptian cotton. Made with a strong neckline that doesn’t bunch after a full day of wear and holds shape after many washes. Available in inclusive sizing and timeless colourways — don’t sleep on the Easy Crew.

Knit Crop Tank

Why it’s my second favourite: Not your typical tank, this cropped knit is fitted, soft and the perfect base layer for a collared shirt or open cardigan as we transition into fall. The textured, ribbed bodice is reminiscent of a classic bustier, without the discomfort. All of the small details add a little extra zhuzh to an outfit while keeping it simple and timeless.

Price: $38 (currently on sale from $65)
Material: 60% Organic Cotton, 40% BCI Cotton
Made in: Ethically crafted in Portugal
Sizes: XS-XL
Rating: 9/10

Fine Knit Skirt

Fine Knit Skirt

Why it’s my third favourite: The unique eco-Viscose fabric has weight to it, giving this skirt a beautiful drape from its high waist down to just above the ankle. The vertical stripes have a way of elongating the leg (great for short-legged gals like myself) and the skirt can easily go from day to night depending on your shoes and accessories. The brand recommends sizing up due to limited stretch in the waistband, but I opted for my usual medium and I’m happy that I did.

Mesh Tee

Why it’s my fourth favourite: I initially balked at the price of this “tee” — and I honestly still feel it’s a little overpriced — but the quality, breathability and weightiness of the fabric has me understanding why it’s not a regular t-shirt. Using the same material as the fine knit skirt above. It’s durable yet soft, and drapes just right. I like the longer sleeve and drop shoulder — a casual look that’s much more elevated than your everyday t-shirt.

Price: $88
Material: 100% Eco Viscose
Made in: Ethically crafted in Portugal
Sizes: XS-XL
Rating: 8/10

Kulthum Tank.

Kulthum Tank

Why it’s my fifth favourite: This delicate tank and seasonally-appropriate long sleeve were inspired by Umm Kulthum, an iconic singer, songwriter and actress born in Egypt and known for her elegant, refined style. The intricate floral detailing paired with a block collar and pearl buttons make this a unique statement piece that can be worn with jeans and sneakers or a skirt and heels.

Linen Station Short.

Linen Station Shorts

Why it’s my sixth favourite: I know we’re heading into fall, but these linen shorts paired with the matching blazer scream showstopper. If you happen to live in a part of the country that still has nice weather — it was 21 degrees today in Vancouver — this combo is a must. The shorts are listed as my sixth favourite, because I’m not sure I’m cool enough to pull them off. Knee length with an A-line flare and pleats, I wonder if I may look like a millennial trying to be Gen Z. Nothing wrong with that, so don’t let me stop any millennial purchases, especially at more than 50 per cent off.

Material: 61% Cotton, 39% Linen

Sizes: 24-34
Rating: 6.5/10

Plaza Trouser

Why they’re my seventh favourite: These came highly recommended, so I’m sad to see them at the bottom of my list. I love a wide leg trouser, but for me there’s just way too much excess material and I find the pants too heavy. They don’t seem to compliment my body type in any way, but they’re another editor’s absolute favourite. I gave them five points, because I know how popular they are and they continue to be a staple and best-seller for the brand. Bonus points for ultra‑breathable, renewable fibre material that’s derived from wood pulp.
