Chad Kelly’s CFL Team Wins In Walk-Off Fashion By MISSING Field Goal ON PURPOSE

The Toronto Argonauts defeated the Saskatchewan Rough Riders on Thursday night with a walk-off missed field goal. It was the most Canadian Football League way to win a game, via the rouge.

Yes, you read that correctly— Toronto beat Saskatchewan by missing a field goal.

For those who are not familiar with the CFL, let this be your introduction to one of the weirdest, most backwards rules in sports. The ‘rouge,’ also referred to as the ‘single’ or ‘single point,’ is exactly how it sounds. It awards a team one point, not from an extra point.

Rather, the kicking team is awarded a rouge if it either punts the football or misses a field goal, and the receiving team does not get the ball out of their own end zone. CFL end zones are 20 yards deep so there is always an opportunity for a return… unless the ball goes through the end zone and out of bounds. Should that happen, and the ball goes flying out of the back of the end zone, the kicking team is still awarded a rouge. A miss can still result in a single point.

Quarterback Chad Kelly, the league’s reigning Most Outstanding Player, was coming off of an overturned suspension and showed some rust in his 2024 debut. He threw for only 322 passing yards and one interception without a touchdown.
