Peninsula golfers shine at Canadian Junior Girls Championship

Junior golf girls win Team B.C. trophy during championship tournament

A couple of Semiahmoo Peninsula golfers were busy playing in the 2024 Canadian Junior Girls Championship at Marine Drive Golf Club this week – one topping the leaderboard early in the competition – with Team B.C. crowned champions of the championship’s Inter-Provincial Division after Round 2 play on Tuesday (July 23).

South Surrey golfer Ha Young Chang, 16, who led the field Monday with an incredible start after carding a 4-under 68 in Round 1, represented Team British Columbia with Langley’s Amy Seung Hyun Lee and Victoria’s Chelsea Truong to win the Mary Pyke trophy on Tuesday for being the best province.

Chang contributed to the team’s winning efforts with a 77 score on Tuesday, while Lee shot 76 on Monday and 73 on Tuesday, and Truong’s 4-over 76 on Monday and 72 on Tuesday also helped. The team combined for a total score of one-over, eight shots clear of runners-up Team Manitoba.

“My shots and my putting were good overall. My goal today was to make birdies on the par 5’s,” Chang said in a Monday release,  prior to the team’s win.  “Before this tournament I practised a lot on my wedge shots, so I think that really helped me and I am glad my team is winning for this year, hopefully we can keep it up.”

White Rock golfer Clara Ding was also competing in the junior championships.

At press time, Shauna Liu led both the junior and juvenile divisions at the tournament; Ding was fourth in junior and third in juvenile, while Chang was listed at seventh in the junior division and fifth in juvenile.

Chang has been enjoying a successful season, highlighted by finishing as runner-up and breaking a course record with a round of 65 at the 119th B.C. Women’s Amateur at Balfour Golf Course in Balfour, B.C. in June and placing first place in the GolfBC Group BC Women’s Open in the Amateur Division.
