On This Day: Shreveport has Rough go in Canadian Football League debut

The Shreveport Pirates made their Canadian Football League debut on this day 30 years ago. The Pirates completed a grand total of one pass in the affair north of the border.

So much for that wide-open CFL style.

The Ottawa Rough Riders led by 14 points at the half and scored the final 19 points of a 40-10 dismantling of the fledgling Pirates.

Shreveport quarterback Terrence Jones didn’t complete a pass in the first half as the visitors were outgained 265-9 in the passing game.

The Pirates tied the game at 7 with the help of a 1-yard touchdown run from Reggie Barnes and later got a 22-yard field goal from Bjorn Nitmo.

That’s not to say a local didn’t shine.

Former Louisiana Tech running back Michael Richardson piled up 155 yards and a score on 23 carries. Ottawa receiver Jock Climie hauled in 11 catches for 153 yards and three touchdowns.
