Hilariously painful Canadian Open moment saw PGA Tour star taken out by security

Top golfers are apparently tough to identify.

World no. 1 Scottie Scheffler was recently arrested by the Louisville Police Department after trying to drive into Valhalla Golf Club in heavy traffic at the recent PGA Championship.

A year earlier at the RBC Canadian Open, Adam Hadwin was taken down by a security guard on the 18th hole for being mistaken for a law-breaking fan.

The then-world no.75 had run onto the green to celebrate with his victorious fellow Canadian Nick Taylor, who had just beaten Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic play-off with a 72-foot eagle putt.

Taylor’s victory – which earned him $1.62million [£1.29m] in prize money – was the first by a Canadian in the Canadian Open since 1954.

Friends, players and fellow Canadians alike rejoiced as Hadwin ran onto the green to spray champagne in Taylor’s direction.

But a security guard mistook the PGA Tour golfer for a random spectator and unceremoniously dumped him on his backside on the green.

Taylor’s caddie was one of the first to realise the mistake and a number of people on course jumped to Hadwin’s aid.

Tournament Director Bryan Crawford told CNN that the security guard did ‘not immediately recognize’ Hadwin and other Canadian players that rushed onto the green to celebrate with Taylor.

“The security officer was doing their job and acting in the moment amidst a flurry of excitement and celebration on the green following one of the most iconic moments in Canadian sport,” Taylor said.

“We are pleased with how both parties quickly rectified the misunderstanding and embraced the moment.”

“Corner of my eye I saw he got a nice tackle there,” Taylor added.

“I hope he’s all right. He was upright when I saw him later, so I hope he doesn’t wake up tomorrow morning with any broken ribs or anything.”

Thankfully, the 36-year-old was unharmed and he even joked about the incident after, tweeting a photo of the takedown alongside the caption@ ‘Put it in the Louvre!’

He even changed his profile picture and header to an image of the incident and retweeted a Golf Canada official who’d written: “This is the bottle, and it’s going in the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame.”

Many fellow players also saw the funny side, including Tyrell Hatton, who wrote on social media: “Gutted for Tommy but what a way to win your national open! Mad scenes! Praying for Adam Hadwin, what a tackle.”

Hadwin’s wife Jessica also amusingly tweeted a meme which said, ‘Get my lawyer on the phone!’ and she then added: “Sorry to leave y’all hanging, had to get the toddler ready for bed.

“I’m thrilled to report that @ahadwingolf is still among the land of the living and in true Canadian form, apologised to the security guard for being tackled.”

The 2024 RBC Canadian Open gets underway at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club in Ontario this week.

Hadwin, the current world no. 55, will have been hoping to fare better at this year’s tournament.

Sadly, his bad luck at the Canadian Open seems to have have continued.

This week, the 2017 Valspar Championship winner took to social media to complain about being separated from his clubs by Air Canada.

“I know most of you feel the same way I am right now when airlines mess up,” Hadwin wrote before revealing his equipment was stuck in Denver.

“I’ve been dealing with @AirCanada all day trying to get me clubs out of Denver. Been told one thing only for something else to happen. At this point, they have sat in Denver for 20 hours without making it.”

He later revealed that his clubs were on a separate flight to Toronto.

“Onto another flight to Toronto. Unacceptable. It’s not as if Denver and Toronto are remote. Airlines need to do better.”
