9 countries where the Canadian dollar will go a long way, according to travel experts
If you’ve been dreaming of planning an international vacation but your budget and the strength of the Canadian dollar are giving you second thoughts, here’s some good news: there are still plenty of countries where the Canadian dollar will go a long way!
Even in 2025, you don’t need to break the bank to enjoy an unforgettable trip abroad. By choosing destinations where the Canadian dollar is strong, you can stretch your budget further, leaving more room for splurging on experiences, food, and maybe even an upgrade on your hotel.
We’ve rounded up a list of dreamy destinations where the Canadian dollar will go a long way, using the advice of travel experts from the CAA, Money.ca and more.
As well as ever-popular vacation spots like Mexico, this list also includes bucket-list-worthy destinations that might surprise you— like Japan!
Before you get too excited, though, keep in mind that while these places may offer good value for your loonies once you’re on the ground, specifics like flights from Canada might still set you back a bit. Plus, some of these places require long-haul flights, so you’ll likely need to plan for a trip of at least 10 days or more to make the journey seem worthwhile.
What’s more, the cost of things like accommodation, transportation, and tours can vary depending on your travel style and the time of year you set off.
But hey, a little thoughtful planning can go a long way, especially when your dollar is already giving you an advantage!

Why You Need To Go: According to the travel experts at the CAA, Money.ca and a report from The Globe and Mail, Mexico should be at the top of your list if you want to visit a country where the Canadian dollar will stretch.
From golden beaches in Cancun to the bustling streets of Mexico City, this vibrant country offers something for everyone, whether you’re a foodie, a history buff, or just in need of some sunshine.
The Globe and Mail says that the Canadian dollar is worth around 15% more in Mexico than it was this time last year, which means it’s a great time to visit if you’ve been waiting to travel with a strong CAD.
Vietnam
Exchange Rate: CA$1 = 17,730.44 Vietnamese Dongs
Why You Need To Go: According to the same pros, Vietnam is one of the best places for Canadians to visit if you want your dollar to go a long way.
Not only does the exchange rate work heavily in your favour, but Vietnam is also one of the most affordable countries for Canadian travellers.
With an average daily spend of just CA$74, according to a recent report from HelloSafe, you can enjoy everything from delicious bowls of pho to scenic cruises through Ha Long Bay without splurging all of your savings.
Thailand
Exchange Rate: CA$1 = 23.87 Thai Baht
Why You Need To Go: The experts at Money.ca and the CAA agree that Thailand is a top choice if you’re looking for a country where the Canadian dollar is strong right now.
Not only does the exchange rate make your money go further, but Thailand is also generally considered affordable once you arrive.
HelloSafe found that you can get by for two weeks in Thailand for around CA$700, including food, accommodation, and transportation. That’s a steal for paradise-level scenery, mouthwatering street food, and unique cultural experiences.
Travel influencer Graeme Bligh—also known as The Canadian Jetsetter—told The Globe and Mail that Canadian travellers can really level up their vacations in Thailand due to the country’s affordability.
“It’s a bit more difficult and expensive to fly there,” he said. “But once you get there, one of the nicest hotels I’ve ever stayed at, Conrad Bangkok, a five-star luxury hotel, it was $160 Canadian a night.” He added that he’d usually spend around $8 per meal.
Morocco
Exchange Rate: CA$1 = 6.99 Moroccan Dirhams
Why You Need To Go: Morocco is a vibrant and budget-friendly destination that travel experts from the CAA and Money.ca say should be on your radar if you want to stretch your budget.
From the bustling souks of Marrakech to the stunning blue streets of Chefchaouen, Morocco promises a mix of culture, history, and adventure. And the best part? The Canadian dollar goes far here, so you can splurge on activities like camel rides in the Sahara or a traditional hammam experience without feeling guilty about the exchange rate.
Japan
Exchange Rate: CA$1 = 109.35 Japanese Yen
Why You Need To Go: This one might come as a surprise, but Japan is becoming a more accessible destination for Canadians thanks to the Canadian dollar strengthening against the Japanese Yen.
According to Amra Durakovic, a Flight Centre Travel Group spokesperson who spoke to The Globe and Mail, Japan’s renowned ski resorts, like those in Niseko and Shiga, are drawing more Canadian travellers.
“Canadians are going skiing, they’re going to all-inclusives and [Japan has] some of the best ski slopes in the world,” Durakovic shared.
That said, Japan isn’t the most affordable destination to travel to or get around in, with daily expenses averaging around CA$145, according to HelloSafe.
However, if it’s already on your bucket list, now might be the perfect time to go for an iconic Japan experience that includes Tokyo’s neon lights, Kyoto’s tranquil temples, and some of the world’s best ski slopes.
Argentina
Exchange Rate: CA$1 = 713.81 Argentine Pesos
Why You Need To Go: According to travel experts, Argentina is a destination where your Canadian dollar can really stretch. With stunning landscapes in Patagonia, vibrant cities like Buenos Aires, and world-class wine regions like Mendoza, Argentina is a dream come true for Canadian travellers looking for something a little different.
Like the Canadian dollar, the Argentine peso has struggled recently, making a trip to Argentina more affordable than ever for Canucks, according to Money.ca.
While daily costs average around CA$109, per HelloSafe’s report, the favourable exchange rate means you’re still on track to get good value.
Colombia
Exchange Rate: CA$1 = 3,084.64 Colombian Pesos
Why You Need To Go: Colombia is a standout destination for Canadians looking to make the most of their travel budget. With an exchange rate of over 3,000 pesos to the Canadian dollar, it’s hardly surprising that experts at the CAA are recommending this South American gem.
Even better, HelloSafe predicts that daily expenses for accommodation, transportation, and food in Colombia will come in under CA$54—making it one of the most affordable destinations on this list.
From the colourful streets of Cartagena to the lush coffee regions and breathtaking mountains of Medellín, Colombia has a little something for everyone. The only challenge will be getting there!
Hungary
Exchange Rate: CA$1 = 275.74 Hungarian Forints
Why You Need To Go: Hungary is a gem for Canadian travellers looking to stretch their dollars, with CA$1 converting to an impressive 275 Hungarian Forints as of December 23.
According to Money.ca, Hungary’s decision not to adopt the Euro keeps it more affordable than neighbouring countries like France and Spain.
Daily expenses in Hungary average around CA$105, making it an affordable option for exploring its stunning cities and historic sites.
Whether you’re wandering the cobblestone streets of Budapest, soaking in the famous thermal baths, or indulging in hearty goulash and local wines, Hungary is the perfect European getaway—no euros required!
Australia
Exchange Rate: CA$1 = 1.11 Australian Dollars
Why You Need To Go: If you’re open to long-haul travel, Australia is a fantastic option where the Canadian dollar can stretch further, according to Amra Durakovic, a spokesperson for Flight Centre Travel Group who spoke to The Globe and Mail.
“Australia is a wonderful place to travel to this time of year, and also our Canadian dollar stretches far,” Durakovic shared. And, from the iconic Sydney Opera House to the Great Barrier Reef and the stunning outback, there’s no shortage of bucket-list experiences to check off there.
That said, flights to Australia can be pricey, and the journey is a long one, so you’ll want to plan for an extended stay to make the most of it. But if you’re up for the trip, it’s almost guaranteed to be well worth the journey!
